Is a good name for this, since producer/DJ has 'involved' himself in each of the tracks. Everything on was exclusively recorded or remixed for the collection. His influence isn't always evident but his involvement in everything keeps the album cohesive, always sounding light, a bit trippy, and a tasteful metallic blue.
Is mixed, but for headphones rather than the dancefloor. It isn't until 's 'Watching Cars Go By' comes in nine tracks deep that you can seriously shake and shimmy, but with such great productions to get lost in, even the flightiest club kid should be seduced. Puts the echo to 's wistful 'Talk Amongst Yourselves,' pulls the beat out from under Petter's 'These Days' while slowing it down, and chops up 's 'In a State' just to make it even more otherworldly. Smoother than smooth, the album can act as wallpaper but has enough twists and turns for active listening. Gushes about the tunes and tells you what he did to them in the liner notes, but the mix is just as delicious if you don't give a toss about the concept.
Sasha’s Involver 3 will be released on March 18th. In the dance world, the anticipation surrounding this album is akin to a U2 comeback tour. In every corner of underground clubs filled with party goers, Sasha’s name is once again being whispered with fervor. Alongside long-time partner John Digweed, Sasha laid the foundations for modern deep tech-house with his seminal Renaissance Mix Compilation (1994), Northern Exposure series (1996), and productions like Xpander (1999). As the 2000s saw a change in the techno landscape, the progressive style that he had pioneered fell out of style for some time, giving way to new, darker sounds- for a while more tribal, then more minimal. But now, with melody again at the forefront of dance music, the king is ready to make a comeback.
Sasha has been playing gigs back to back for many months now in anticipation of this big event, and we have to say, looking at the tracklist, full of names we haven’t heard in a while and many we’ve never heard of, we’re quite excited.
Real Name Alexander Paul Coe Profile A much-renowned DJ and production figure in trance and progressive circles, Sasha was born in 1969 in North Wales UK. Became famous in the late 80's and early 90's for residencies at clubs like Shelly's, the Hacienda, and most notably Renaissance. At Renaissance, formed a now-famous DJ partnership with John Digweed which continues to the present day. In the early- to mid-90's, turned out several productions of his own and did remixes for Urban Soul, M People, Creative Thieves and the Pet Shop Boys, among others. In 1999, he formed a new partnership in the studio with Charlie May (one half of Spooky) and released the 'Xpander' EP, and in 2002, the full-length album 'Airdrawndagger'.
In 1997 he founded and ran the now defunct Excession label. In 2007 he started emFire, a new label for his own recordings. In late 2011 he launched his new digital imprint Last Night On Earth. Websites.
At this point, the 21st century has defined well-over half of Sasha's career, and is still best exemplified by this first Involver, one of his earliest releases in this era. Considering that the first few years of the 2000's were a huge slump for house and trance, Involver solidified itself as a shining beacon in the midst of mediocrity, albeit shy of perfection. The implementation of a 'remix album' is particularly apt for Sasha, who holds roots deepest in the DJ/mixing family rather than in production - not to say that the latter is lacking, as shown here.
Instead, it helps Sasha to really turn on the gears, because he has full control over the soundscape and its progression. Case in point: 'Dorset Perception' in its original incarnation, while nothing short of a spectacular track, makes absolutely no sense in this mix. Before I had first heard Involver, I recall scanning the tracklist and being concerned with this track's addition - at that time unaware that this is, in fact, a remix album. Sasha, with his DJ ears, is able to make out and create a remix that surprisingly works in the scope of its surrounding tracks.
This also applies to the variety of vocal tracks from miscellaneous genres found in the mix. In most cases, an abundance of vocal tracks remixed independently, then randomly stitched together, would sound overbearing and not really what we typically come to Sasha and other similar DJ's for. It can teeter on pop-py (see Invol. I just got me sealed copy. Its staying sealed as well. On the whole as packaging goes.
