What works Game installs ok and seems to run fine first time with no major tinkering needed. I have only tested single player on 1920 x 1080 resolution as far as the first level but no major issues. Graphics, sound, keyboard, mouse, all running fine. I have patched to version 1.42d before running.
What does not Workarounds What was not tested I have not tested multiplayer or online, or resolution modes other than 1920 x 1080. I have also not tested without the v1.42d patch. Hardware tested Graphics:. GPU:.
Driver: Additional Comments Delighted that this works so well and so easily. I followed the advice of the other tester on here and found and installed the v1.42d patch. The 'start menu' entry which wine creates comes up with error 'file not found', but this may be due to the multiple wine prefixes I have installed - I've not checked further. This is straightforward to workaround by launching the.exe file from the wine c drive folder.
There were a few issues to begin with as the game defaults to 640 x 480 resolution, which seemed to display the menus ok but messed up my desktop on exiting the game. This problem was fixed with changing the resolution to the same as the desktop.
Berzerk2002: The Venom Mod has been updated three days ago from v5.0 to v5.4. You can download it here: Also ioRtCW has been updated from v1.42d to v1.51 over the last couple of months. Get the latest version here: Here's you can see the changelog: So I'm new to patching RTCW. I have the latest GOG version (1.41). Should I install both Venom mod 5.4 AND ioRtCW 1.51, or one or the other? Is there any other patch I need to install before or any I should install after, or is 1.41 good enough for both of those?

Berzerk2002: Install the latest GOG version, then install ioRtCW 1.51 or Return to Castle Wolfenstein v1.42d Patch (I use ioRtCW) and after that is done install Venom mod 5.4. Okay, so I did that and for some reason I couldn't get ioRtCWx64 to recognize my custom resolution.
I wanted to play with Dynamic Super Resolution on, so I set a custom resolution but it didn't work. I ended up using the default WolfSP.exe and played through all parts of the first mission just fine (my custom resolution worked with that EXE), but then the game crashes constantly when trying to load the first part of the second mission.
I tried with the ioRtCWx64 exe and the crash still happened. Any suggestions? edit Well, I was able to fix my issue, instead of using ioRtCW I'm using 1.42d patch. I can't get DSR working right anymore, but I force 8x AA through NVCPL and it looks and plays great. Thanks for your help. I'm having an issue not mentioned anywhere (I could find). Initially I get the error and program won't launch.
I do the v1.42d Patch and the game launches but is basically broken. When the wet Activision thing pops up it starts freezing. The menus and sound are almost solid frozen. (like move the mouse. Wait four seconds to see where the pointer ends up slow/frozen). What could be causing this?
System specs: Lenovo M72e, Pentium G2020, HD 2000/2500 graphics, 4 GB ram, Windows 10. Internet machine bought refurb cheap. Bypass activation code on rca tablet. But would also like to do some light gaming. Would really like to play this game (never played it back in the day).
Exciting news! After doing some testing, it appears that the 1.42d unofficial patch for RTCW is suitable for speedrunning!
This is particularly important because it means that people can now install the steam version of the game, then apply the unofficial patch and run on equal footing with 1.00. Some of the game crashes have been fixed, which should improve quality of life for runners quite a bit. I have added a value for 1.42d in the Game Version variable, and the win32 binary distribution of the patch is available on the Resources page as a.ZIP archive.
See 'Patch 1.42d readme.txt' and '1.42dChanges.txt' in the.ZIP archive for author and change information. I don't know if your aim is to have a competitive leaderboards on whatever version is best suited for running, or on the fastest officially released version, but from the 'general speedrunning rules', mods, external file manipulations and unofficial versions shouldn't be allowed. There seems to be several changes in the patch that could affect the gameplay: - Added fix for laggy AI in norway map (thanks Zaero).
Fixed tesla gun and flamethrower firing in noclip mode, when leaning, and when underwater. Fixed hint icon appearing for alarm boxes at ranges farther than they can be activated from.
Fixed loading autosaves partially breaking briefing cutscenes. Added support for mouse buttons 4 and 5.

'general speedrunning rules'? The 'general speedrunning rules' (note that I use quotes for a good reason) were established by SDA, many years before this site. Everyone followed it, but then the speedrunning community started to shatter to specific game communities, which sometimes made up their own 'weird' rules.
There is actually no mention about using unofficial patches, but believe me, they are not allowed. The reason is simple - unofficial patches can change gameplay. Same thing can happen with source ports and mods. If this community allows it, it's your decision and I'll have to accept it, even though I disagree. Sourceruns is the case of its own. I don't understand the 1.00 argument. You can easily get this version from ebay or any other auction.
There are plenty of copies around. To be fair, it seems SDA has definitely made some good updates to its rules since I last looked at them (which would have been in 2013 or so), and the ruleset as a whole seems a lot more reasonable than what I remember.
Then again I may have been thinking about their verification guidelines: which I still think are asinine. I welcome additional opinions on this matter; I've been running on 1.00 all along, and am happy to continue doing so. I will leave 1.42d as an optional game version for now, pending further input from people who would prefer that it isn't allowed.
You're right, original game discs seem to be easier to get than I thought. But the merits of letting people get into running the game via the steam version shouldn't be understated. Maybe we should see if downpatching the steam version to 1.1 would help. Yeah, the SDA admins woke up and started updating the rules recently (even though it's too late anyway). Their verification guidelines are quite hardcore for 2016 and have been a subject to criticism, but to no end. It pretty much disallows all twitch vods, which is what majority of runners use.
Btw, I recall that in cases when the unofficial patch doesn't change any gameplay, it was allowed in order to fix crashes or video/sound issues on modern PCs. It's still a bit shady, though, since there could be a new hidden bug. The 1.42d definitely needs testing imho. If RtCW works the same way as Q3, it should be enough to just delete specific pk3 files and use the 1.00 exe.
I think people should be allowed to run either 1.00 or the 1.42d patch as long as it's specified. For reference, I know Half-Life has different categories based on how you run the game. You can use the BunnymodXT injector to re-enable bunnyhopping in the standard Steam version which allows way more people to get into the game, or you can download mods of the game that will make it behave as older versions of the game (the pre-Steam 'WON' version), and then there's also the NGHL Half-Life client which is also a mod. And Half-Life is very popular for speedrunning.
What's below is the previous description; the official Master Server is back and running, only PunkBuster remains an issue; the tips given are still useful though;) Since a while now, iD Software has stopped the Master Server (the server which displays a server list client-side), and the anti-cheat software has also dropped the support to the game, as well as Quake III and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory (PunkBuster). So, as is, the game can't be played online easily. This guide will give you the keys to one of the most successfull MP of all time, RtCW MP! Now, the game files are ready. We're going to add a server list:) Start the Notepad with admin rights (right click, start as admin or something like that). Then click on the menu File, Open., then browse: C: Windows System32 drivers etc Open hosts (a file without extension, make sure it isn't read-only with right click/Properties when you browse it); If you don't see it make sure you have at the bottom right selected ' All files' and not 'Only ANSI text files'. Go to the bottom of the file while opened, and add as a new line: 64.22.107.125 107.161.23.68 Save the file.

Start the game and. TA-DAA: Don't forget to enable the PunkBuster on the screen above! Or if you prefer the console way ( for QWERTY keyboards, ² for AZERTY ones), check the value of /clpunkbuster, if not 1 type /seta clpunkbuster 1.
Check that: - You started the Notepad as admin. You saved the file WITHOUT a txt extension. Open the hosts file and check the line you've added is there, without typos. Verify your game is present as an exception in your firewall. Check that the CD Key is present in the settings: see the top of the section below. If after these checks, you still have no server list.
Well, you're part of a few group of users ^^' You can try modified 1.41 binaries with hardcoded new master server address (thanks cole): What you can try, and it worked for some of these people, is this distrib (thanks sal): Let's hope it will be OK, I haven't tried it myself. Allow custom content downloadSeveral server are running Shrubmod (Fun Mod) or OSP (Comp Mod), and may also have custom maps in their rotation, and custom content (models, sounds.). But, by default, the game doesn't allow the download of custom content, and there's no entry in the GUI to enable it. To enable the client download system, open up the console ( for QWERTY keyboards, ² for AZERTY ones), and type: /seta clallowdownload 1 Sadly, the game doesn't support the download through the HTTP protocol, which means stunningly low download rates.

But don't worry, there's a solution:) And it is called RtCW Map Downloader: When started it runs in the background (see the icon in the taskbar), and when a file need to be downloaded, it will close the game, download for you the file(s), then restart the game. Advanced gameplay cvarsWell, not that advanced, but you probably don't know about them if you're following that guide, and you'll need the console (or add launch parameters, or edit directly the wolfconfigmp.cfg file). Draw the FPS counter /seta cgdrawfps 1 Modify the FPS cap (90 by default) The usual value is 125, fyi. /seta commaxfps 125 Change the Field of View (FOV - 90 by default) I think the max allowed is 120 in RtCW, but I use 110.
You'll see if you get kicked because of it:) Don't worry, you'll not get kicked with a value of 110! /seta cgfov 110. When you'll browse the server list, you'll probably join servers with bots, while you're looking for real players.

Unfortunately, the ingame browser can't filter out the bot servers, but there are trackers online who do:) The oldest one is SplatterLadder: Click on sl.Serverlist, then gameversion, and tick RtCW 1.40/1.41 to only display RtCW servers. Then, in Properties, second column third item, you can filter out Bots on Server by ticking until you have a red cross. As a last recommendation, here is a populated server the evening, with usually 30+ players, ECGNetwork: 64.237.36.250:27960 To join it, open up the console and type /connect ip; Copy/paste works in this engine:) bestpriceservice Myself and 2 friends have a private funded MP server running the beach map. You can /connect 46.165.204.172:27960 in console. Bots too if no humans around.
