Dec 13, 2015 My ISP gave me a new cable modem, and here we go again to disable wifi and use a dedicated wifi router in order to get a improved and strong signal. This process always relies in the same steps, disabling Wireless, DHCP and NAT, making Arris modem work in bridge mode. Before Start. Your wifi router must be configured with LAN IP 192.168.0.1. Do not plug a network cable between the wifi router and Arris TG862.
Your computer must be connected to Arris TG862 wifi. Changing Arris TG862 LAN IP First step is to open Arris TG862 web interface. Log in using admin as user, password as password. At LAN Setup tab:. Change IP Address to 192.168.1.1. Change Start IP Address to 192.168.1.2. Change End IP Address to 192.168.1.254.
Click on Apply (Arris will restart and you’ll loose the wifi connection for few seconds). Connect to your Wifi router Turn on your wifi router and now plug the network cable between it and Arris at port 1. Now, connect your computer to your router wifi network (and not to Arris wifi).

Reverting Changes After change your ARris TG862 to work in bridge mode, it’ll no more allow logins using the web interface: you still will be able to see the login page, but you’ll always get the Invalid Username or Password! If you want to revert all configurations to the previous one (i.e, the one from the ISP), you can reset the Arris TG862 using a pen, pressing the reset button for 30 seconds.

So if, like me, you want to disable Wi-Fi on your Xfinity Arris TG862G cable modem (how about that for SEO), here's what you need to know: just call Comcast and ask them to put your device into 'bridge mode'. I did, it was painless, it took them a minute or two, and the box became exactly what I wanted: a transparent bridge between co-ax cable and my Asus router. I was having a fit trying to get my new TWC Arris TG862 into Bridge mode. I have been trying to connect my Linksys N750 to this modem combo and the speed was just falling off. When I was connected directly to the Arris, i was downloading @ 108mbps. From my Linksys, 11mpbs. Something wasn't right.
Every time I would try to set the modem to Bridge mode under NAT settings, it would apply it, remove all IPs, then kick me out and not let me back in. Even after setting the password, it simply would not let me back in. I must have reset the modem 6-7 times. Finally, I just had to call support. Here is exactly what I asked support to do: 1. Disable the firewall 2. Turn off DHCP 3.
Set to Bridged mode 4. Turn off WiFi Once this was completed, I connected back to my Linksys and setup my Wifi networks that I had done originally. DO NOT CLONE YOUR MAC ADDRESS!!! This was my mistake and I couldn't figure it out for a few.
Once I removed this setting and rebooted, BAM!! 40mbps down wirelessly on 5ghz and 15mbps down on 2.4 ghz. This is the best it's been. I have my desktop connected directly to the Linksys downloading at 110-120mbps.

Obviously direct connections are the best. Needless to say, I'm am very happy now. Make sure those settings with the Arris stay. I just confirmed at the end of the call with the tech to check again. If you want, you can also get them to set the password back to default if you need to.

The default wireless network key (also known as the network password ) is located on a white label at the bottom of the TG862. By default, the TG862 is configured for a wireless connection using WPA-PSK encryption. If the Wi-Fi Security key has been changed in the TG862, it can be retrieved by logging into the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the TG862.
This document describes how to locate the default wireless network key on the gateway, and also how to locate the wireless network key if it has been changed. Frankly, this is absolutely disgusting! I had (have) the same problem. Worked with TWC tech (transferred me four times before someone was able to work on the problem). After wasting several hours to no avail they gave up, and all the time it was apparently not working because it wasn't activated and understand there is an extra charge to activate wifi.
Because TWC has a monopoly in this area they can do what they like - and the FCC is probably bought and paid for, so they won't do anything anytime soon.
